Parashat Vayetzé – Conectando cielo y tierra

La vida de Yaakov Avinu no fue nada fácil, de hecho, fue bastante difícil, de los tres patriarcas fue el que más tuvo que luchar vindicar su lugar en la historia para trascender. Vemos a Yaakov saliendo de su país hacia lo desconocido e incierto, lleno de temores y dudas. En su camino sueña con una escalera que viene desde el cielo y reposa en la tierra, y ángeles descienden y suben a través de ella, allí Dios le habla. Al final de esta revelación Yaakov se sorprende por la magnificencia de lo que acaba de experimentar en ese lugar y lo nombra “Bet El”(Casa de Dios); es particularmente interesante la expresión que Yaakov utiliza al sorprenderse: “…y yo no sabía”

Lo que Yaakov pudo ver en su sueño y comprender al despertar, no es otra cosa que la conexión entre el mundo físico y el mundo espiritual. Hasta ahora Yaakov sólo podía ver los acontecimientos de su vida en el plano terrestre, con el sueño se dio cuenta de toda la actividad y conmoción que en el plano espiritual se movía a su alrededor. Y así supo que no estaba solo en su lucha, sino que ángeles lo acompañaban.

Muchas veces nos sentimos solos en nuestras luchas y pruebas, como un soldado contra todo un ejército. Nuestro patriarca nos dejó el conocimiento para entender que nuestro camino está siempre acompañado de la energía Divina, y así no pasar por la angustiosa incertidumbre del “no saber”.

Vemos al final de la Parashá a Yaakov Avinu regresando lleno de riquezas espirituales y materiales, y con una enorme diferencia, ahora “sí sabe” cómo se mueve el mundo, entiende que hay una conexión entre el cielo y la tierra, aunque a veces la ignoramos. A su regreso Yaakov ve dos campamentos de ángeles; esta vez no necesitó un sueño, los vio despierto, porque ahora que está apercibido de su entorno, sus ojos están abiertos y está consciente de que todo lo que sucede en este plano físico está siendo acompañado por un poderoso proceso espiritual.

Hashem nos ayude a abrir nuestros ojos, y entender que nada de lo que sucede en nuestras vidas está desconectado de su correspondiente arriba; así podamos ver ángeles, donde quiera que estén, con nuestros ojos espirituales, y por qué no con los físicos también.

Connecting Heaven and Earth

The life of Yaakov Avinu was anything but easy—in fact, it was quite difficult. Of the three patriarchs, he was the one who had to struggle the most to vindicate his place in history and to transcend. We see Yaakov leaving his homeland toward the unknown and uncertain, full of fears and doubts. On his journey, he dreams of a ladder reaching down from heaven and resting upon the earth, with angels descending and ascending upon it—and there God speaks to him. At the end of this revelation, Yaakov is astonished by the magnificence of what he has just experienced in that place, and he names it Beit El (“House of God”). The expression he uses in his amazement is particularly interesting: “…and I did not know.”

What Yaakov was able to see in his dream, and understand upon awakening, is nothing other than the connection between the physical world and the spiritual world. Until then, Yaakov could only perceive the events of his life on the earthly plane. Through the dream, he realized all the activity and commotion taking place around him on the spiritual plane. And thus he understood that he was not alone in his struggle—angels accompanied him.

Many times, we feel alone in our struggles and trials, like a soldier facing an entire army. Our patriarch left us the wisdom to understand that our path is always accompanied by Divine energy, so that we do not fall into the anguishing uncertainty of “not knowing.”

At the end of the parashah, we see Yaakov Avinu returning filled with both spiritual and material wealth—and with one great difference: now he does know how the world works. He understands that there is a connection between heaven and earth, even though at times we may ignore it. Upon his return, Yaakov sees two camps of angels; this time he did not need a dream—he saw them while awake. Now that he is aware of his surroundings, his eyes are open, and he is conscious that everything happening in this physical plane is accompanied by a powerful spiritual process.

May Hashem help us open our eyes and understand that nothing that happens in our lives is disconnected from its counterpart above. May we be able to see angels—wherever they may be—with our spiritual eyes, and why not, even with our physical ones as well.
