¿Era necesario enviar tantas y terribles plagas para liberar a los israelitas de Egipto? ¿No podía Hashem hacerlo en un segundo? Claro que sí, entonces… cuál fue la necesidad de todo esto.

Hay un principio fundamental de la física, y es que la energía nunca desaparece, se transforma; energía potencial se convierte en cinética, energía hidroeléctrica se convierte en lumínica, lumínica en calórica, etc. Pues lo mismo sucede con la energía espiritual, de alguna forma se transforma y retorna, sea de manera positiva o negativa. Esto es un principio básico para el equilibrio del universo y es imposible evadirlo.

Durante siglos los egipcios derramaron sobre los esclavos hebreos energía negativa, toda clase de crueldades que más tarde recibieron de vuelta a través de las terribles plagas. Así, el Nilo se convirtió en sangre como consecuencia de los niños hebreos que ellos ahogaron en él; el polvo se convirtió en piojos porque obligaban a los hebreos a barrer el polvo de las calles, una tarea sin término; como tampoco les permitían bañarse pero si los obligaban a preparar sus baños, con la plaga de úlceras no se podían bañar; etcétera, etcétera. Cada plaga correspondía a una forma en que esa energía negativa se devolvía de forma justa para restaurar el equilibrio de la justicia.

A este principio espiritual nuestros sabios lo llamaron “Midá kenegued midá” (medida contra medida). Todo acto bueno o malo, tiene su consecuencia equivalente, ya sea de inmediato o de forma muy tardía, en esta reencarnación o en la siguiente, el balance de la energía espiritual siempre se dará. De igual manera cada uno de nuestros actos está generando una transformación en nuestro entorno, y tarde o temprano regresa como un bumerán. Por eso es precioso pensar y meditar cada acto, cada palabra.

Que actuemos bien, recibamos solamente bendiciones y seamos librados de las plagas que hirieron a los egipcios.

Measure for Measure

Was it really necessary to send so many terrible plagues in order to free the Israelites from Egypt? Couldn’t Hashem have done it in a single second? Of course He could—so then, what was the need for all of this?

There is a fundamental principle of physics: energy never disappears; it is transformed. Potential energy becomes kinetic; hydroelectric energy becomes light, light becomes heat, and so on. The same is true of spiritual energy: in some way it is transformed and returns, whether in a positive or negative form. This is a basic principle for the balance of the universe, and it is impossible to evade it.

For centuries, the Egyptians poured negative energy upon the Hebrew slaves—every kind of cruelty—which they later received back through the terrible plagues. Thus, the Nile was turned into blood as a consequence of the Hebrew children whom they drowned in it; the dust became lice because they forced the Hebrews to sweep the dust from the streets, an endless task; just as they did not allow them to bathe but did force them to prepare their baths, with the plague of boils they themselves were unable to bathe; and so on and so forth. Each plague corresponded to a way in which that negative energy was returned in a just manner, in order to restore the balance of justice.

Our sages called this spiritual principle “midah keneged midah” (measure for measure). Every good or bad act has its equivalent consequence, whether immediately or much later, in this incarnation or the next; the balance of spiritual energy will always take place. In the same way, each of our actions generates a transformation in our surroundings, and sooner or later it returns like a boomerang. That is why it is so precious to think and reflect on every action, every word.

May we act well, receive only blessings, and be spared the plagues that struck the Egyptians.
