Shabat Shalom umevoraj
Rab. Sem. There are many interpretations as to why this one is permitted and that one is not, but the truth is that the Torah does not provide a reason. This is what we call a chok—a decree that must be observed even without an explanation.

What is absolutely clear, however, is what the Torah teaches us through these restrictions: “Even when you feel the need to satisfy your most basic desires, the world does not belong to you; you borrow from it, and you may not take whatever you please, only what I permit you.” In short, the laws of Kashrut teach us that we are not the owners of the world, but merely guests within it.

This moral lesson has never been more relevant or clearer than in the times we are living in. Through a pandemic and various epidemics, we have been forced to learn that we cannot do whatever we please with the universe under the excuse of satisfying our needs. If only we had paid attention to the laws of Kashrut—especially to their underlying message—we would have learned to recognize our limits, to respect the world entrusted to us, to say “no” even when instinct pushes us to take everything without regard for consequences, and to be humble and grateful for what we have rather than constantly desiring more.

Kashrut is the ultimate guide for subduing the ego; its observance fosters self-discipline, something that is lacking in today’s generation. The prevailing mindset today is: “do whatever you want, however you want,” “if you want it, then you need it,” “if you need it, take it by any means.” The main excuse given by Jews who do not observe Kashrut is: “Why should I deny myself the pleasure of eating good shrimp?” Beyond the shrimp and how tasty they may be, this response reveals a deeply selfish attitude rooted in the human psyche: “I must satisfy my desires for pleasure without restriction.” Ultimately, this mindset is what has driven the destruction of the world. If it were only about shrimp or pork chops, it would not be so harmful, but this premise extends to all types of desire: power, money, honor, physical pleasure, and more. When we believe we own the world and must fulfill our cravings at any cost, desire becomes destructive. This, in essence, is the story of human catastrophe.

Part of human greatness lies in the ability for self-restraint and discipline. As our sages teach in Pirkei Avot: “Eizehu gibor? Hakovesh et yitzro” — “Who is mighty? One who conquers their own inclination.”

Shabbat Shalom uMevorach
Rab.
