Shabat Shalom umevoraj

Rab. Sem. Dr. Yaakov Rodriguez

Being close to G-d

This week we begin the study of the third book of the Torah, Vayikra. The first parashah, which bears the same name, describes the different types of Korbanot (offerings) that were to be brought in the Mishkan and later in the Beit HaMikdash in Jerusalem.

The word Korban is generally translated as “sacrifice”; however, this translation is quite far from the true meaning of the term. While a Korban often involved the slaughtering of an animal, there were also offerings of plant origin. The word Korban derives from the verb lekarev (“to draw near”) and is connected to the idea of closeness to the Divine.

The most important idea behind the korbanot is that God desires that we draw near to Him, and likewise, He wishes to draw near to us. In ancient times, gods were perceived as distant and unreachable beings, and great efforts—“sacrifices”—were required to gain their favor. Judaism reverses this concept and introduces a new vision of the relationship between human beings and the Divine: God is interested in having a close and reciprocal relationship with His creations. He also desires to be involved in their well-being and growth.

Judaism teaches us that at any moment in our lives, God is near; we can rely on His support, His love, and His compassion. As King David said in Tehillim 145: “Karov Adonai lechol kor’av, lechol asher yikrauhu be’emet” (“Hashem is close to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth”). “In truth” means with sincerity and honesty of heart. To be close to God, all we must do is approach Him with genuine intentions.

Shabbat Shalom uMevorach

Rab.
