En el desierto el proyecto m\u00e1s grande, sin lugar a dudas, que nuestros ancestros llevaron a cabo fue la construcci\u00f3n del Mishk\u00e1n y todos sus utensilios, as\u00ed como las vestiduras de los kohanim. Este proyecto involucr\u00f3 absolutamente a todas las personas, dirigidos por Betzalel se desarrollaban las labores de recolecci\u00f3n, tejido, tinci\u00f3n de telas, construcci\u00f3n, recamado, orfebrer\u00eda y metalurgia, herrer\u00eda, etc, etc. Debi\u00f3 ser un momento sumamente emocionante para todos, por primera vez desde su liberaci\u00f3n como esclavos, estaban haciendo algo por s\u00ed mismos para s\u00ed mismos. Es el momento de la semana que nos permite recordar para qu\u00e9 estamos construyendo ese Mishk\u00e1n. Aleg\u00f3ricamente, todos nosotros estamos viviendo en el desierto de este mundo, y al mismo tiempo construyendo, a trav\u00e9s de toda nuestra labor bajo el sol, un lugar en donde pueda residir la Presencia Divina, la Shejin\u00e1. Esa es al final la misi\u00f3n de cada alma, construir un espacio de divinidad en el mundo f\u00edsico. No obstante, es muy f\u00e1cil obsesionarse con la tarea al punto de olvidar su prop\u00f3sito. Constantemente la gente se centra en los detalles, en el hacer y el tener, al punto que olvidan la raz\u00f3n por la que hacen lo que hacen. Para evitar eso est\u00e1 el Shabat.<\/p>\n
D\u2019os sab\u00eda que esto podr\u00eda pasar y por eso orden\u00f3 a Mosh\u00e9 advertir a los hijos de Israel que no olvidaran guardar Shabat, antes de que iniciaran las labores de construcci\u00f3n. D\u2019os sab\u00eda de nuestra naturaleza, de c\u00f3mo f\u00e1cilmente en medio de nuestro af\u00e1n por el mundo f\u00edsico olvidar\u00edamos nuestro origen divino; por eso nos dio el Shabat, un d\u00eda para recordar el prop\u00f3sito de nuestra existencia en este mundo.<\/p>\n
En esta Parash\u00e1 la Tor\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n menciona la prohibici\u00f3n de \u201cencender fuego\u201d o extinguirlo durante Shabat, la \u00fanica melaj\u00e1 (labor) que la Tor\u00e1 menciona de manera expl\u00edcita; \u00bfy, por qu\u00e9 es tan importante mencionar esta? Podr\u00eda haber dicho \u2018no sembrar\u00e1n\u2019 o \u2018no construir\u00e1n\u2019. La Tor\u00e1 menciona esta melaj\u00e1 en particular, porque el fuego representa el potencial creativo del ser humano, su capacidad \u00fanica de manipular el mundo f\u00edsico. En Shabat se nos pide renunciar a esa capacidad, a poner a un lado nuestro ego, y reconocer nuestra peque\u00f1ez. Le devolvemos al Creador Su mundo.<\/p>\n
Por eso es tan importante encender las velas de Shabat en su horario y hacer Havdal\u00e1 encendiendo una vela. Terminamos e iniciamos nuestra semana laboral con fuego. Terminamos nuestro viernes con una \u00faltima acci\u00f3n creativa, aquella que representa nuestra capacidad \u00fanica entre las criaturas y as\u00ed hacemos pausa y recordamos el prop\u00f3sito de esa capacidad. Una vez refrescados y reenfocados retornamos a nuestras labores encendiendo la vela de Havdal\u00e1, una llama m\u00e1s grande y m\u00e1s fuerte que la del viernes, volviendo a asumir nuestra responsabilidad en el mundo, pero con un sentido de prop\u00f3sito. Para eso era necesario abandonar el fuego durante un d\u00eda completo, el Shabat, que al final es el combustible que fortalece el fuego de la Tor\u00e1 en nuestros corazones para toda la semana.<\/p>\n

Restoring the Crown of Shabbat<\/strong><\/h3>\n
In the wilderness, the greatest project our ancestors undertook\u2014without a doubt\u2014was the construction of the Mishkan<\/strong>, along with all its utensils and the garments of the kohanim<\/strong>. This project involved absolutely everyone. Under the leadership of Betzalel<\/strong>, tasks such as collecting materials, weaving, dyeing fabrics, construction, embroidery, goldsmithing and metalwork, blacksmithing, and many other crafts were carried out. It must have been an extraordinarily exciting moment for all of them. For the first time since their liberation from slavery, they were doing something for themselves and for their own sake. They were so enthusiastic that they did not want to rest until the work was finished.<\/p>\n
For this very reason, before the people began the great task of building the Mishkan, the Parashah<\/strong> opens with the command: \u201cSix days shall you perform labor, but the seventh day shall be sacred for you\u2026\u201d<\/em> In this way, God instructs the people about the obligation to rest on Shabbat<\/strong>, despite how motivated they were about this project. Not even the construction of the Sanctuary\u2014where God would cause His Presence to dwell\u2014was considered a sufficient excuse to avoid pausing during the week through the contemplation of Shabbat.<\/p>\n
Shabbat is an island in time, an island of reconnection with the divine, with ourselves, and with others. It is the moment of the week that allows us to remember why<\/strong> we are building that Mishkan. Nevertheless, it is very easy to become so absorbed in the task that we forget its purpose. People constantly focus on the details\u2014on doing and having\u2014to the point that they forget the reason why they do what they do. That is precisely why we have Shabbat.<\/p>\n
God knew this could happen, and that is why He commanded Moshe<\/strong> to warn the children of Israel not to forget to observe Shabbat before they began the work of construction. God knew our nature\u2014how easily, in the midst of our striving within the physical world, we might forget our divine origin. For that reason, He gave us Shabbat: a day to remember the purpose of our existence in this world.<\/p>\n
In this Parashah, the Torah also mentions the prohibition of \u201ckindling fire\u201d<\/strong> or extinguishing it during Shabbat, the only melachah<\/strong> (labor) that the Torah explicitly mentions. Why is this one singled out? It could have said, \u201cYou shall not sow,\u201d or \u201cYou shall not build.\u201d The Torah mentions this particular melachah because fire represents the creative potential of the human being<\/strong>, the unique human capacity to manipulate the physical world. On Shabbat, we are asked to relinquish that capacity, to set aside our ego, and to recognize our smallness. We return the Creator His world.<\/p>\n
That is why it is so important to light the Shabbat candles<\/strong> at their proper time and to perform Havdalah<\/strong> by lighting a candle. We both conclude and begin our workweek with fire. We end our Friday with one final creative act\u2014the one that represents our unique capacity among all creatures\u2014and then we pause and remember the purpose of that capacity. Once refreshed and refocused, we return to our labors by lighting the Havdalah candle, a flame larger and stronger than that of Friday, once again assuming our responsibility in the world but now with a renewed sense of purpose.<\/p>\n
For this reason, it was necessary to set aside fire for an entire day\u2014Shabbat\u2014which ultimately becomes the fuel that strengthens the fire of Torah in our hearts throughout the week.<\/p>\n
