Qui\u00e9n querr\u00eda volver a las m\u00e1quinas de escribir, a un mundo sin horno microondas, sin calefacci\u00f3n o sin aire acondicionado, definitivamente el futuro est\u00e1 en facilitar nuestras vidas, o no?<\/p>\n<p>En la Parash\u00e1 de esta semana se nos cuenta c\u00f3mo, ante la necesidad de independencia y espacio, Abraham Avinu le propone a su sobrino Lot separarse y habitar en zonas distintas de \u00c9retz Israel y as\u00ed procurar paz. Lot mira hacia los cuatro puntos cardinales y queda embelesado por El Valle del Jord\u00e1n, que seg\u00fan narra la Tor\u00e1 era una tierra verde irrigada por arroyos y r\u00edos; pero hab\u00eda un peque\u00f1o detalle, all\u00ed se encontraban las corruptas ciudades de Sodoma y Gomorra. A pesar de eso, Lot descendi\u00f3 para vivir all\u00ed. Contrariamente, Abraham decide vivir en el desierto de Beer Sheva, all\u00ed los arroyos no corr\u00edan ni la tierra era f\u00e1cilmente cultivable, sino que para conseguir agua tuvo que cavar pozos.<\/p>\n<p>Sabemos m\u00e1s adelante cu\u00e1l fue el final tr\u00e1gico y pat\u00e9tico de Lot en contraste con la gloriosa continuidad de Abraham Avinu. \u00bfEn qu\u00e9 se equivoc\u00f3 Lot, c\u00f3mo puede ser que quien fuera criado como un tzadik en la casa de Abraham y Sarah, terminara siendo rescatado de un bot\u00edn de guerra, salvado casi por la fuerza del fuego que destruy\u00f3 Sodoma, su esposa convertida en estatua de sal, exiliado en la monta\u00f1a, violado por sus dos hijas y siendo el incestuoso padre de dos naciones imp\u00edas, como lo fueron Am\u00f3n y Moab, que hoy d\u00eda ya no existen? El origen de este terrible final fue su errada decisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Lot decidi\u00f3 por aquello que brillaba, escogi\u00f3 la opci\u00f3n m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil, la que implicaba menos esfuerzo. En Sdom no hab\u00eda que cavar pozos, era f\u00e9rtil y todo estaba a la mano en aquella gran ciudad. Todo ese esplendor fue suficiente para ignorar y no querer ver la maldad que infestaba los corazones de sus habitantes. Abraham por el contrario lo vio claramente, oscuridad disfrazada de luz, y entendi\u00f3 que era preferible cavar pozos en el desierto y conservar la pureza de su alma a tener una vida f\u00e1cil.<\/p>\n<p>Al igual que Lot, nos vemos siempre tentados a escoger lo m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil, a\u00fan si detr\u00e1s de esa decisi\u00f3n hay otras m\u00e1s oscuras que amenazan nuestra integridad y la pureza divina que reside en cada uno. Es m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil entrar a vivir en un castillo abandonado que construir una casa desde cero. El problema con esa decisi\u00f3n es que el castillo podr\u00eda estar tan da\u00f1ado que pueda derrumbarse sobre nuestras cabezas.<\/p>\n<p>A diferencia de la tecnolog\u00eda, el viaje de la Nesham\u00e1 (alma) no est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ado para ser f\u00e1cil, por el contrario requiere de trabajo, prueba y dificultad para lograr su nivel m\u00e1s elevado. As\u00ed que cuando nos encontramos frente a dos opciones, es muy probable que en la mayor\u00eda de las veces, la menos popular y la menos f\u00e1cil sea la correcta.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Shabat Shalom umevoraj!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Rab. Sem. Dr. Yaakov Rodr\u00edguez<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"116\" data-end=\"444\">We live in a world where what is easy is glorified. The technological revolution constantly seeks to make all our daily tasks automatable, simpler. Who would want to go back to typewriters, to a world without microwave ovens, without heating or air conditioning? Surely the future lies in making our lives easier \u2014 or does it?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"446\" data-end=\"1146\">In this week\u2019s <em data-start=\"461\" data-end=\"471\">Parashah<\/em>, we are told how, faced with the need for independence and space, Abraham Avinu proposes to his nephew Lot that they separate and settle in different areas of Eretz Israel, thus preserving peace. Lot looks toward the four cardinal directions and becomes captivated by the Jordan Valley, which, as the Torah describes, was a lush land irrigated by streams and rivers. But there was one small detail: it was home to the corrupt cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Despite this, Lot went down to live there. In contrast, Abraham chose to live in the desert of Beer Sheva, where streams did not flow and the land was not easily cultivable\u2014he had to dig wells in order to find water.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1711\">Later we learn the tragic and pitiful end of Lot, in contrast to the glorious continuity of Abraham Avinu. Where did Lot go wrong? How could someone raised as a <em data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1317\">tzadik<\/em> in the home of Abraham and Sarah end up being taken as part of a war booty, rescued almost by force from the fire that destroyed Sodom, his wife turned into a pillar of salt, exiled in the mountains, violated by his two daughters, and becoming the incestuous father of two wicked nations\u2014Ammon and Moab\u2014that no longer exist today? The origin of this terrible end lay in his misguided choice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"2239\">Lot chose what glittered; he chose the easiest option, the one that required the least effort. In Sodom there was no need to dig wells\u2014it was fertile, and everything was readily available in that great city. All that splendor was enough for him to ignore, or not wish to see, the evil that infested the hearts of its inhabitants. Abraham, on the other hand, saw it clearly\u2014darkness disguised as light\u2014and understood that it was better to dig wells in the desert and preserve the purity of his soul than to live an easy life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2241\" data-end=\"2628\">Like Lot, we are constantly tempted to choose what is easiest, even if behind that choice lie darker consequences that threaten our integrity and the divine purity that dwells within each of us. It is easier to move into an abandoned castle than to build a house from scratch. The problem with that decision is that the castle might be so damaged that it could collapse upon our heads.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2630\" data-end=\"2954\">Unlike technology, the journey of the <em data-start=\"2668\" data-end=\"2678\">Neshamah<\/em> (soul) is not designed to be easy. On the contrary, it requires effort, trial, and challenge in order to reach its highest level. So when we are faced with two options, it is very likely that, most of the time, the less popular and less comfortable one is the right choice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2956\" data-end=\"3022\"><strong data-start=\"2956\" data-end=\"2985\">Shabbat Shalom umevorach!<\/strong><br data-start=\"2985\" data-end=\"2988\" \/><em data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3020\">Rab.
