Ning\u00fan otro libro nos habla tan claro de la naturaleza humana como la Tor\u00e1. En nuestra Parash\u00e1, el desafortunado evento de los esp\u00edas nos deja tantas lecciones, que podr\u00edamos escribir un libro completo solo sobre esta.<\/p>\n

Recapitulemos: Mosh\u00e9 env\u00eda 12 l\u00edderes del pueblo, hombres ilustres y justos, a espiar \u00c9retz Israel para reconocerla justo antes del inicio de la conquista; los esp\u00edas recorren la Tierra y la describen como una tierra que ciertamente mana leche y miel, pero desalientan al pueblo diciendo que es imposible de conquistar; solamente Yehosh\u00faa y Caleb dan un informe optimista lo cu\u00e1l casi les cuesta la vida a manos del vulgo; al final el pueblo llora desconsoladamente toda esa noche sin raz\u00f3n y consecuentemente son castigados con no entrar a la Tierra y vagar 40 a\u00f1os en el desierto.<\/p>\n

Hay demasiados temas que tocar aqu\u00ed, pero me gustar\u00eda concentrarme en la reacci\u00f3n del pueblo ante el informe positivo y optimista de Yehosh\u00faa y Caleb. Fueron ellos los \u00fanicos de los 12 esp\u00edas que motivaron a los jud\u00edos a creer y entrar a conquistar la Tierra con fe y seguridad, fueron los optimistas, los \u00fanicos que realmente vieron la verdad completa y no a medias; a\u00fan as\u00ed casi fueron apedreados por eso. El pueblo decidi\u00f3 o\u00edr las voces de la negatividad y el pesimismo, lloraron sin raz\u00f3n toda la noche, porque a fin de cuentas eso deseaban escuchar.<\/p>\n

Los 10 esp\u00edas traidores fueron sumamente populares, el pueblo los amo y acept\u00f3 su informe, despu\u00e9s de todo eran mayor\u00eda \u00bfno? Y adem\u00e1s estaban diciendo lo que ellos quer\u00edan escuchar; porque estaban paralizados de miedo ante la inminente guerra y su fe era tan flaca que ni los grandes milagros que hab\u00edan visto les ayudaban ahora. Por eso lloraron, lloraron y lloraron.<\/p>\n

La diferencia de Yehosh\u00faa y Caleb, entre muchas que podr\u00edamos se\u00f1alar, es que ellos eran l\u00edderes a pesar de ser impopulares. La naturaleza humana es reacia a la cr\u00edtica y a la contradicci\u00f3n, a nadie le gusta o\u00edr que est\u00e1 equivocado o que debe hacer algo distinto a lo que est\u00e1 acostumbrado. Queremos o\u00edr lo que deseamos escuchar, de lo contrario lo rechazamos instintivamente. Se requiere madurez y objetividad, hacer a un lado el orgullo y el ego, para escuchar las voces de Yehosh\u00faa y Caleb.<\/p>\n

Ojal\u00e1 nosotros mismos podamos convertirnos en ellos, l\u00edderes verdaderos, aunque terminemos siendo impopulares.<\/p>\n

The Leader vs. The Popular One<\/strong><\/p>\n

No other book speaks as clearly about human nature as the Torah. In our Parashah, the unfortunate episode of the spies leaves us with so many lessons that one could write an entire book just about this.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s recap: Moses sends 12 leaders of the people\u2014distinguished and righteous men\u2014to spy out the Land of Israel and assess it just before the beginning of the conquest. The spies explore the Land and describe it as a place truly flowing with milk and honey, but they discourage the people by saying it is impossible to conquer. Only Joshua and Caleb give an optimistic report, which almost costs them their lives at the hands of the mob. In the end, the people weep all night long without reason and are consequently punished by being barred from entering the Land, doomed to wander the desert for 40 years.<\/p>\n

There are many themes to address here, but I would like to focus on the people\u2019s reaction to the positive and hopeful report given by Joshua and Caleb. They were the only ones among the twelve spies who encouraged the Jews to believe and enter the Land with faith and confidence. They were the optimists, the only ones who truly saw the full truth and not just part of it; and yet, they were almost stoned for it. The people chose to listen to voices of negativity and pessimism, weeping all night without cause\u2014because, in the end, that\u2019s what they wanted to hear.<\/p>\n

The ten traitorous spies were incredibly popular; the people loved them and accepted their report. After all, they were the majority, right? And they were saying what the people wanted to hear\u2014because the people were paralyzed by fear at the prospect of war, and their faith was so weak that not even the great miracles they had witnessed could help them now. That\u2019s why they cried and cried and cried.<\/p>\n

Joshua and Caleb, in contrast, represented faith, self-esteem, optimism, commitment, and a spirit of dedication to the cause. And so, they were profoundly unpopular\u2014because they were saying what no one wanted to hear. How dare these two insolent men try to push them out of their comfort zone? That\u2019s why the people wanted to kill them. Nevertheless, in the end, Joshua became Moses\u2019 successor, Caleb, one of Israel\u2019s great leaders, and both were the only ones of that slave generation who entered the Land of Israel, conquered it, and ate its fruits.<\/p>\n

The difference between Joshua and Caleb\u2014among many that could be pointed out\u2014is that they were leaders despite being unpopular. Human nature resists criticism and contradiction; no one likes to hear they are wrong or that they should do something different from what they\u2019re used to. We want to hear what we want to hear\u2014otherwise, we instinctively reject it. It takes maturity and objectivity\u2014a setting aside of pride and ego\u2014to hear the voices of Joshua and Caleb.<\/p>\n

May we ourselves become like them: true leaders, even if it means becoming unpopular.<\/p>\n
