Parashat Miketz – Sacar a la luz el pasado

Yosef Hatzadik se ha convertido ahora en el virrey de Egipto, ya no está en la cárcel.  ¿Cómo sucedió semejante salto? Pues logró no sólo interpretar los sueños de Faraón sino también darle la solución a lo que se avecinaba: siete años de abundancia seguidos por siete años de hambruna.

Uno se pregunta, ¿cómo es que siendo ahora el segundo hombre más poderoso del mundo, Yosef no fue de inmediato a buscar a su padre Yaakov, decirle que estaba vivo y contarle todo lo acontecido en estos años? Por el contrario, pasaron los siete años de abundancia, inició la hambruna y eso obligó a sus hermanos, quienes lo habían vendido hacia más de veinte años, a descender a Egipto en busca de comida, y reencontrarse sin saberlo con Yosef, a quien no pudieron reconocer. Lo que aquí sucedió es que Yosef enterró su pasado y no quería enfrentarse a él, lo guardó en la oscuridad y allí decidió dejarlo.

Dios ha diseñado el universo de una forma perfecta y misteriosa, de manera que un mismo evento conecta múltiples situaciones al mismo tiempo para diferentes objetivos y personas. Yosef fue vendido por sus hermanos, esto lo llevó a desarrollar su potencial como administrador en la casa de Potifar, esto lo llevó a prisión, allí interpretó el sueño del copero real, esto lo llevó ante el Faraón mismo quien lo convirtió en virrey, los años de abundancia le permitieron acumular grano con su astucia e inteligencia, esto hizo que sus hermanos descendieran a Egipto a buscar comida, así se reconcilió con su pasado, se reencontró con su padre, la familia de Yaakov se salvó, se asentaron en Egipto, etc…

Así como Yosef intentó escapar de su pasado y sin planearlo se vio enfrentado a sanar sus fantasmas internos, ninguno de nosotros puede eludir aquello que estamos destinados a resolver. Mañana, en un año o muchos, en esta vida u otra, terminaremos enfrentándonos con ese gigante que tanto tememos, y al igual que Yosef podremos salir airosos.

Que este Januká saque a la luz todos nuestros temores y pendientes, que sean iluminados y veamos muchos milagros en cada acontecimiento conectado de nuestras vidas, y podamos convertirnos de esclavos del pasado en gobernantes absolutos de nuestro propio Egipto.

Bringing the Past into the Light

Yosef HaTzadik has now become the viceroy of Egypt; he is no longer in prison. How did such an extraordinary rise take place? Not only was he able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, but he also provided the solution to what was about to unfold: seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine.

One may wonder: how is it that, now being the second most powerful man in the world, Yosef did not immediately go to find his father Yaakov, tell him that he was alive, and recount everything that had happened over the years? On the contrary, the seven years of abundance passed, the famine began, and this forced his brothers—who had sold him more than twenty years earlier—to descend to Egypt in search of food and unknowingly reunite with Yosef, whom they were unable to recognize. What happened here is that Yosef buried his past and did not want to confront it; he kept it hidden in the darkness and chose to leave it there.

God has designed the universe in a perfect and mysterious way, such that a single event connects multiple situations simultaneously, serving different purposes and people. Yosef was sold by his brothers; this led him to develop his potential as an administrator in the house of Potiphar; this led him to prison; there he interpreted the dream of the royal cupbearer; this brought him before Pharaoh himself, who appointed him viceroy; the years of abundance allowed him to store grain with wisdom and intelligence; this caused his brothers to descend to Egypt in search of food; thus he reconciled with his past, was reunited with his father, Yaakov’s family was saved, and they settled in Egypt, and so on.

Just as Yosef attempted to escape his past and, without planning it, found himself forced to heal his inner ghosts, none of us can evade that which we are destined to resolve. Tomorrow, in a year, or many years from now, in this life or another, we will ultimately face the giant we fear so deeply—and, like Yosef, we will be able to emerge victorious.

May this Hanukkah bring all our fears and unfinished matters into the light, may they be illuminated so that we may see many miracles in every connected event of our lives, and may we transform ourselves from slaves of the past into absolute rulers of our own Egypt.
