For Nahmanides, there is no doubt that this is a historical prophecy describing the future of a Jewish People unable to maintain its bond with God and His Torah.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"1450\">The simplest way we have learned to interpret this passage is through the concept of punishment. However, for many classical commentators such as Ibn Ezra, it is nothing more than the inevitable consequence of social and spiritual disorder. The universe is governed by physical laws such as gravity, inertia, and motion. There are also biological and physiological laws that regulate the balance of ecosystems and the functioning of living organisms. No one questions these laws: without gravity, the Earth would leave its orbit and life upon it would be impossible; a small imbalance in an ecosystem endangers all the creatures that inhabit it; without sufficient water, the human body begins to collapse and survival becomes impossible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1695\">No one rebels against these laws. We accept them as part of the natural order. We do not hear people blaspheming against gravity or claiming they wish to choose whether or not to live without water; it simply is not possible, and we accept it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"2297\">Social and spiritual laws are no different; they too are necessary and part of the natural order of the universe. When we choose to act against them, the result is chaos. For <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Abraham Joshua Heschel<\/span><\/span>, the Parashah speaks about how human behavior directly affects our relationship with the Divine. When that bond is broken, disorder and despair prevail. <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jonathan Sacks<\/span><\/span> points out that the covenant of the Torah contains two dimensions: individual freedom and collective responsibility. When one of these dimensions is absent, all the tragedies of the Tojaj\u00e1 unfold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2794\">We live in a time in which individual freedom has been idolized to an unsustainable extreme, and that unhealthy individualism has turned us into selfish, disconnected, dissatisfied, and anxious people.
