        "rendered": "<pre>English translation found below<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cada a\u00f1o, al avecinarse la festividad de P\u00e9saj, las redes sociales y los mensajes de Tor\u00e1 aqu\u00ed y all\u00e1 se llenan de la palabra \u201cLibertad\u201d, reflexiones sobre la importancia de este valor y derecho universal, de c\u00f3mo debemos luchar por ella y c\u00f3mo P\u00e9saj nos llama una vez m\u00e1s a apreciar su importancia.\u00a0 Sin embargo, la mayor\u00eda del tiempo hablamos de la libertad con tanta naturalidad que asumimos entender de qu\u00e9 se trata y no reflexionamos suficiente sobre su significado real.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El pasado Shabat Hagadol, durante la discusi\u00f3n de la Tor\u00e1 en la ma\u00f1ana, pregunt\u00e9 a mi congregaci\u00f3n c\u00f3mo definir\u00edan \u201clibertad\u201d.\u00a0 Al inicio nadie fue capaz de dar una respuesta concreta, a pesar de que todos asum\u00edan saber qu\u00e9 era inicialmente. Por el contrario, surgieron muchas respuestas sobre lo que no era la libertad y si realmente exist\u00eda. Se dieron respuestas como:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Es la capacidad de poder decidir lo que uno quiere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significa poder actuar sin que nadie le imponga qu\u00e9 hacer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Es el libre albedr\u00edo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La libertad realmente no existe, porque estamos condicionados por el sistema en que vivimos.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Si el gobierno o mis padres deciden por m\u00ed \u00bfsoy libre?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Si uno est\u00e1 obligado a cumplir con leyes y normas, \u00bfes eso realmente libertad?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El concepto de libertad que manejamos el d\u00eda de hoy en occidente responde a una evoluci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica desde la antigua Grecia hasta los pensadores contempor\u00e1neos.\u00a0 Para los griegos \u201cEleutheria\u201d (libertad), significaba la capacidad de poder participar en la vida pol\u00edtica (polis), los romanos definieron \u201cLibertas\u201d como la condici\u00f3n de no ser esclavo y tener derechos legales.\u00a0 En la Europa medieval la libertad fue asociada a un concepto religioso relacionado con el estar libre de pecado y poder alcanzar la salvaci\u00f3n del alma.\u00a0 No es hasta la Ilustraci\u00f3n de la Edad Moderna que la reflexi\u00f3n sobre el concepto de libertad se profundiz\u00f3 en medio del despertar del humanismo, y figuras como John Locke y Jean-Jacques Rousseau hablan de la libertad como un derecho natural que responde a la autonom\u00eda colectiva basado en la capacidad de la libertad de pensamiento.\u00a0 Entre los siglos XIX y XX la discusi\u00f3n entre capitalismo vs socialismo se centra en si la libertad implica la no interferencia del Estado o como dec\u00eda Marx \u201csin verdadera igualdad econ\u00f3mica no hay libertad\u201d.\u00a0 En el mundo del siglo XXI la mayor\u00eda de los sistemas entienden libertad como la garant\u00eda de derechos pol\u00edticos como el voto, sociales como la salud y la educaci\u00f3n, e incluso digitales como la privacidad y el acceso a la informaci\u00f3n.\u00a0 No obstante, en todos estos casos surgen las limitaciones, hasta d\u00f3nde es posible la libertad cuando invade el espacio del otro, \u00bfes eso verdadera libertad?, y si para proteger los riesgos de la anarqu\u00eda y el desorden es necesario imponer restricciones \u00bfes la libertad realmente posible o solamente una utop\u00eda?\u00a0 Es evidente que si se compara un r\u00e9gimen opresivo como el de la Rep\u00fablica Isl\u00e1mica de Ir\u00e1n con una democracia plena como la de Costa Rica, la diferencia sobre libertades salta a la vista.\u00a0 Pero aqu\u00ed la pregunta que nos ata\u00f1e es: \u00bfes esta la libertad de la que nos habla P\u00e9saj?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vamos ahora al juda\u00edsmo, cuyo concepto de libertad no ha cambiado significativamente desde la historia del \u00c9xodo de Egipto, pasando por los sabios del Talmud y la Kabbalah.\u00a0 Leemos todos los a\u00f1os en la Hagad\u00e1 \u201cAvadim hayinu lepar\u00f3 bemitzraim\u201d (fuimos siervos del Fara\u00f3n en Egipto), y celebramos los milagros y acontecimientos que concluyeron en nuestra liberaci\u00f3n de los sufrimientos y opresiones que nos imped\u00edan la autodeterminaci\u00f3n como naci\u00f3n.\u00a0 Luego viene la Tor\u00e1 y dice m\u00e1s adelante en el libro de Vayikr\u00e1 25:55 \u201cKi li Bnei Israel avadim\u201d (pues los hijos de Israel son mis siervos), es decir que D\u2019os nos liber\u00f3 de ser siervos de Par\u00f3 para ser ahora siervos suyos; \u00bfno es esto una contradicci\u00f3n con el concepto de libertad? si simplemente cambiamos de amo, entonces seguimos siendo esclavos, ahora de un amo benevolente, pero esclavos al fin; \u00bfo no?\u00a0 Si basamos nuestro concepto de libertad en nuestra comprensi\u00f3n moderna de esta, no hay forma de reconciliar este anacronismo.\u00a0 Sin embargo para el juda\u00edsmo la libertad no tiene nada que ver con la visiones grecorromanas o del renacimiento.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En hebreo la palabra utilizada para libertad es Jerut \u05d7\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea, y est\u00e1 asociada directamente al siguiente hito hist\u00f3rico que vino seguido a la redenci\u00f3n de la esclavitud en Egipto, la d\u00e1diva de la Tor\u00e1, el establecimiento de la ley, de la normativa etico moral que deb\u00eda regir de ahora en adelante la vida de los israelitas.\u00a0 Para la Tor\u00e1 la libertad est\u00e1 intr\u00ednsecamente asociada a la capacidad de asumir responsabilidad sobre las acciones propias y colectivas y restringir los impulsos del comportamiento, a eso que llamamos Yetzer Har\u00e1, a trav\u00e9s de normas y preceptos que me ayudan a elevarme espiritualmente para alcanzar mi m\u00e1ximo potencial como persona.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dijeron nuestros sabios acerca de las Lujot Habrit (las tablas de la Ley) que estaban grabadas en piedra por el dedo de D\u2019os, \u201cAl tikr\u00e9 jarut ela jerut\u201d no leas \u201cjarut\u201d (grabada) sino \u201cjerut\u201d (libertad); y haciendo un juego de dos palabras muy similares en hebreo, definen la libertad como la Tor\u00e1 misma.\u00a0 Es decir, que si una persona se somete al cumplimiento de las Mitzvot, esa persona ser\u00e1 libre.\u00a0 Libre de su mal instinto y de sus pasiones, libre de su naturaleza f\u00edsica, instintiva y reactiva, que dar\u00e1 libertad a su conciencia elevada y a su alma para descubrir la naturaleza misma del prop\u00f3sito de la Creaci\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La palabra Jerut \u05d7\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea, puede ser dividida tambi\u00e9n en dos palabras:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rut \u05e8\u05d5\u05ea\u00a0 y jay \u05d7\u05d9.\u00a0 Como todos sabemos \u05d7\u05d9 significa \u201cvida\u201d, por otro lado la palabra\u00a0 \u05e8\u05d5\u05ea es el nombre propio de un personaje central en la historia b\u00edblica y cuya Meguil\u00e1 leemos en la festividad de Shavuot que cierra el proceso de redenci\u00f3n iniciado en P\u00e9saj, Rut la moabita.\u00a0 El significado de su nombre ha sido asociado a derivaciones de palabras como amistad, compa\u00f1erismo, ver y comprender o de quien desciende una gran estirpe, en referencia a su bisnieto el Rey David, figura predecesora del Mash\u00edaj.\u00a0 Una guematria popular para la palabra\u00a0 \u05e8\u05d5\u05ea explica que el valor num\u00e9rico de este nombre es 606, si a este valor sumamos 7, obtenemos 613, Tariag Mitzvot, el n\u00famero de preceptos contenidos en la Tor\u00e1.\u00a0 Es decir que si bien inicialmente Rut estaba solamente obligada a cumplir con las 7 Mitzvot de los Bnei Noaj, su decisi\u00f3n honesta y profundamente llena de amor de unirse a Am Israel le sum\u00f3 esas otras 606 Mitzvot junto con sus m\u00e9ritos; y esto le dio vida.\u00a0 Hay vida en el cumplimiento de la Tor\u00e1, y esa es una vida de libertad.\u00a0 Pero sigue abierta la pregunta \u00bfqu\u00e9 es entonces la libertad? \u00bfcu\u00e1l es su verdadero prop\u00f3sito? \u00bfsolamente que seamos siervos aut\u00f3matas que cumplen con la voluntad de un Ser Supremo?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregunt\u00e9 este Shabat Hagadol tambi\u00e9n a la congregaci\u00f3n si un tigre en una jaula es libre o no, la respuesta es un\u00e1nime, no lo es, pero ante la pregunta de porqu\u00e9 no es libre, la respuesta no es tan simple.\u00a0 \u00bfNo es libre simplemente por el hecho de estar en una jaula? Inconscientemente entendemos que estar en una jaula no es su estado natural, deber\u00eda estar en la selva, cumpliendo con su funci\u00f3n como depredador en el ecosistema, el tigre es libre en tanto puede cumplir con su prop\u00f3sito.\u00a0 El tigre no est\u00e1 libre de restricciones, no puede hacer todo lo que \u00e9l quiere, no puede volar, ni comer pasto, ni trepar a los \u00e1rboles, tiene una serie de capacidades para cumplir con su rol y de limitaciones naturales que le impiden ir m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de su funci\u00f3n y protege el equilibrio natural de su entorno para que las otras criaturas puedan al mismo tiempo cumplir su rol dentro de sus capacidades y limitaciones.\u00a0 Todo el ecosistema est\u00e1 regulado de esta forma para que haya equilibrio y convivencia, est\u00e1 sometido a leyes f\u00edsicas y biol\u00f3gicas, y all\u00ed todos son libres.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cada uno de nosotros est\u00e1 en este plano de existencia con un prop\u00f3sito, a todos nos han sido dados dones y habilidades extraordinarias, pero tambi\u00e9n limitaciones y leyes que nos restringen.\u00a0 Es en este equilibrio donde est\u00e1 la verdadera libertad.\u00a0 No se trata de hacer lo que quiero, se trata de hacer lo que debo, lo que me corresponde hacer dentro de mi ecosistema espiritual.\u00a0 Es por eso que la Tor\u00e1 vino a darnos verdadera libertad, porque marca un camino que regula y ordena nuestras vidas para que cada uno pueda desarrollar plenamente una vida llena de prop\u00f3sito, una vida como la de Rut, de trascendencia m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de s\u00ed misma, donde dar a otros es el objetivo final.\u00a0 En una sociedad as\u00ed hay libertad. La libertad para el juda\u00edsmo implica responsabilidad con la otredad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P\u00e9saj viene a recordarnos que cada uno tiene un Egipto personal del cu\u00e1l salir, todas aquellas cosas que nos oprimen y nos impiden convertirnos en la persona aspiracional que vinimos a ser, que obliteran nuestro potencial y nos alejan de nuestro prop\u00f3sito.\u00a0 Miedos, vicios, relaciones disfuncionales, pensamientos limitantes, odios y rencores, prejuicios, agresi\u00f3n, ira, ego\u00edsmo e individualismo, falta de responsabilidad y empat\u00eda, etc., todo eso son faraones y capataces que nos mantienen sumidos bajo un yugo de peque\u00f1ez espiritual del que debemos redimirnos.\u00a0 Es un proceso continuo y personal, por eso nos insta la Hagad\u00e1 \u201cen cada generaci\u00f3n la persona debe considerar como si ella misma hubiera salido de Egipto\u201d, Mitzraim que en hebreo significa doble estrechez, estrechez de esp\u00edritu y estrechez de mente; en un mandato sempiterno que nos recuerda cada d\u00eda que la redenci\u00f3n es un acto de decisi\u00f3n personal, que si bien es asistido por la intervenci\u00f3n divina, no sucede hasta que decidimos ser libres.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahora tal vez podemos atrevernos a decir que la \u201cLibertad\u201d es el acto consciente de convertirse en la mejor versi\u00f3n de s\u00ed mismo a trav\u00e9s de la disciplina de las normas que nos hacen responsables para cumplir nuestro prop\u00f3sito en este mundo.\u00a0 Merezcamos todos llegar a \u201cZem\u00e1n Jerutenu\u201d, al tiempo de nuestra libertad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rab Sem. Dr. Yaakov Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"52\" data-end=\"103\"><strong data-start=\"52\" data-end=\"68\">True freedom &#8211;\u00a0 Passover Message\u00a05786 (2026)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"602\">Every year, as the festival of Passover approaches, social media and Torah messages everywhere become filled with the word \u201cFreedom,\u201d along with reflections on the importance of this universal value and right, on how we must fight for it, and how Passover once again calls us to appreciate its significance. However, most of the time we speak about freedom so naturally that we assume we understand what it is, without reflecting deeply on its true meaning.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">This past Shabbat Hagadol, during the morning Torah discussion, I asked my congregation how they would define \u201cfreedom.\u201d At first, no one was able to give a concrete answer, even though everyone initially assumed they knew what it meant. Instead, many responses arose about what freedom is not, and whether it even exists. Answers included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">It is the ability to decide what one wants.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">It means acting without anyone imposing what to do.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">It is free will.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">Freedom does not really exist because we are conditioned by the system we live in.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">If the government or my parents decide for me, am I free?<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"1319\">If one is obligated to follow laws and rules, is that truly freedom?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The concept of freedom we use today in the West is the result of a historical evolution from ancient Greece to contemporary thinkers. For the Greeks, <em data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"1483\">eleutheria<\/em> (freedom) meant the ability to participate in political life (the polis); the Romans defined <em data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1587\">libertas<\/em> as the condition of not being enslaved and having legal rights. In medieval Europe, freedom was associated with a religious concept of being free from sin and able to attain salvation. It was not until the Enlightenment that deeper reflection on freedom emerged alongside humanism, with figures like John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau describing freedom as a natural right based on autonomy and freedom of thought. In the 19th and 20th centuries, debates between capitalism and socialism centered on whether freedom meant non-interference by the state or, as Marx argued, that without true economic equality there is no freedom. In the 21st century, most systems understand freedom as the guarantee of political rights (like voting), social rights (such as health and education), and even digital rights (privacy and access to information). Yet in all these cases, limitations arise: how far can freedom go when it invades another\u2019s space? Is that true freedom? And if restrictions are necessary to prevent chaos, is freedom truly possible or merely a utopia?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2691\" data-end=\"3620\">Let us now turn to Judaism, whose concept of freedom has not changed significantly since the Exodus from Egypt, through the sages of the Talmud and the Kabbalah. Each year in the Haggadah we read, <em data-start=\"2888\" data-end=\"2924\">\u201cAvadim hayinu lePar\u00f3 bemitzrayim\u201d<\/em> (we were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt), and we celebrate the miracles that led to our liberation from suffering and oppression, allowing us to become a self-determined nation. Then the Torah states in Leviticus 25:55: <em data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3169\">\u201cKi li Bnei Israel avadim\u201d<\/em> (for the children of Israel are My servants), meaning that God freed us from being servants of Pharaoh to become His servants. Is this not a contradiction to the idea of freedom? If we simply changed masters, are we not still slaves\u2014albeit to a benevolent one? From a modern perspective, this is difficult to reconcile. However, in Judaism, freedom has nothing to do with Greco-Roman or modern interpretations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3622\" data-end=\"4116\">In Hebrew, the word for freedom is <em data-start=\"3657\" data-end=\"3664\">Jerut<\/em> (\u05d7\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea), and it is directly tied to the next historical milestone after the Exodus: the giving of the Torah\u2014the establishment of moral and ethical law to guide life. In the Torah, freedom is intrinsically connected to the ability to assume responsibility for one\u2019s actions and to restrain impulses (the <em data-start=\"3968\" data-end=\"3981\">Yetzer Har\u00e1<\/em>) through commandments that elevate us spiritually and allow us to reach our fullest potential.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4118\" data-end=\"4515\">Our sages taught regarding the Tablets of the Covenant that were engraved by God: <em data-start=\"4200\" data-end=\"4260\">\u201cDo not read \u2018charut\u2019 (engraved), but \u2018cherut\u2019 (freedom).\u201d<\/em> Through this wordplay, they define freedom as the Torah itself. A person who submits to the mitzvot becomes truly free\u2014free from base instincts and reactive nature, allowing the soul to discover its divine purpose.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"4841\">The word <em data-start=\"4526\" data-end=\"4533\">Jerut<\/em> can also be divided into <em data-start=\"4559\" data-end=\"4564\">Rut<\/em> (\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea) and <em data-start=\"4575\" data-end=\"4581\">Chai<\/em> (\u05d7\u05d9, life). Ruth, the Moabite, whose story we read on Shavuot, chose to join the Jewish people and accept the mitzvot, bringing life and meaning. There is life in living according to the Torah, and that life is freedom.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4843\" data-end=\"5210\">I also asked the congregation whether a tiger in a cage is free. Everyone agreed it is not. But why? Not simply because it is confined, but because it is not fulfilling its purpose. A tiger is free when it lives according to its nature within the ecosystem. It has limitations, but those limitations create balance and harmony.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5212\" data-end=\"5525\">Each of us also has a purpose. We are given abilities and limitations. True freedom lies in that balance\u2014not in doing whatever we want, but in doing what we are meant to do. The Torah provides that path, guiding us toward a life of purpose and responsibility toward others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5527\" data-end=\"5984\">Passover reminds us that each person has a personal Egypt to leave behind\u2014those things that oppress us and prevent us from becoming who we are meant to be: fears, addictions, harmful relationships, limiting thoughts, anger, egoism, and lack of empathy. These are our Pharaohs. Redemption is a personal and ongoing process, and as the Haggadah teaches, each person must see themselves as if they personally left Egypt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5986\" data-end=\"6177\">Perhaps we can now say that <strong data-start=\"6014\" data-end=\"6175\">freedom is the conscious act of becoming the best version of oneself through the discipline of living responsibly and fulfilling one\u2019s purpose in this world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6179\" data-end=\"6249\">May we all merit to reach <em data-start=\"6205\" data-end=\"6222\">Zeman Cherutenu<\/em>\u2014the time of our freedom.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6251\" data-end=\"6285\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"6251\" data-end=\"6285\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Rab.
