English translation found below

Shabat Shalom umevoraj!
Rab. Sem. Dr. Yaakov Rodriguez

Opening the Eyes of Objectivity

Preferences—this innate characteristic that defines us as individuals—are healthy and necessary. We exercise them every day: when we get dressed, when we eat, when we choose a movie to watch or a place to go on vacation. But what happens when it comes to people—especially our children? This is one of the controversial themes in this Parashah.

The Torah tells us that of the twins in this story, Rivka preferred Yaakov, who was a wholesome, simple, and studious man, while Yitzchak preferred Esav, who on the contrary was coarse, wicked, and deceitful. How could it be possible that Yitzchak didn’t see this? The Midrash explains that through false displays of piety, Esav presented himself before his father as a righteous man.

On the other hand, Yitzchak Avinu was a prophet—how could he not see Esav’s true nature and understand that no one but Yaakov could continue the spiritual mission of his father, Abraham? Apparently, this was very clear to Rivka. The Parashah itself says that Yitzchak preferred Esav because he ate from his hunting and enjoyed the meat he prepared. This small and seemingly innocent act of self-gratification revealed a trace of ego that clouded our patriarch’s objectivity. And thus, even the greatest spiritual man of his generation was unable to see what was right before his eyes.

This is why the Torah says that Yitzchak was blind—not only literally, but figuratively. Because of his desire for food, his judgment became clouded and he lost his objectivity to such an extent that he was about to give all he had and place in charge of his household his idolatrous and wicked son—something that would have instantly destroyed the entire achievement of Abraham and his own as well.

The story, however, does not criticize Rivka’s preference for Yaakov; on the contrary, it supports it. God Himself allows that even through deception, Yaakov receives the birthright—not simply for having emerged first from the womb, but by merit. Upon realizing the deception, Yitzchak opens the eyes of his understanding, and we see how, despite the plot, he joins Rivka in again blessing and advising Yaakov Avinu on how to continue the mission of bringing forth the Jewish People.

From this story we learn that having preferences is not wrong—when they are exercised with objectivity and wisdom, beyond personal gratification. When we favor someone because of what they give us, rather than based on their merit and qualities, we become blind, and we may even destroy the world while believing we are repairing it. May God grant us wisdom and the ability to subdue our worldly desires so that they do not cloud our judgment.

Chodesh Tov!
Shabbat Shalom umevorach!
Rab. Sem.
