La Tor\u00e1 narra en est\u00e1 Parash\u00e1 tal vez uno de los primeros reclamos \u201cfeministas\u201d de la historia. Se trata de las hijas de Tzelofjad, quienes hab\u00edan quedado hu\u00e9rfanas de su padre, el cual no engendr\u00f3 varones, y por lo tanto, seg\u00fan la ley y la costumbre, no ten\u00edan ning\u00fan derecho a heredar tierras.<\/p>\n

Pero las hijas de Tzelofjad no se conformaron con lo que dictaba la ley o la norma, consideraron que esto era injusto y exigieron su derecho de igualdad y de herencia. Y adivinen qu\u00e9, D\u2019os le dice a Mosh\u00e9 que tienen la raz\u00f3n, que su reclamo es leg\u00edtimo.<\/p>\n

Creen ustedes que estas mujeres hubieran logrado un cambio en el Status Quo si hubieran permanecido calladas y conformes? Definitivamente no. Hoy ellas son un ejemplo para nosotros, de no quedar pasivos ante las injusticias y los fundamentalismos, a\u00fan si esto es lo \u201cnormal\u201d \u201clo aceptado\u201d \u201cla costumbre\u201d. El juda\u00edsmo ha logrado sobrevivir gracias al continuo cuestionamiento de la vigencia de las leyes y su aplicaci\u00f3n a las nuevas realidades que el evolucionar del mundo va generando. Durante el per\u00edodo del Primer Templo, los profetas cuestionaron el sistema sacerdotal, en Babilonia los jud\u00edos se vieron obligados a crear nuevas formas de observancia en una realidad ap\u00e1trida, durante el retorno a Si\u00f3n Ezra y los sabios de la Gran Asamblea realizaron grandes reformas que han llegado a nuestros d\u00edas, despu\u00e9s de la destrucci\u00f3n del Segundo Templo nuestros sabios recrearon las formas del juda\u00edsmo en el Talmud, y as\u00ed a lo largo de los siglos hemos revisado una y otra vez nuestra forma de guardar la Tor\u00e1.<\/p>\n

El juda\u00edsmo no es dogm\u00e1tico, no creemos a ciegas y sin cuestionamientos en verdades misteriosas, es por el contrario una tradici\u00f3n cien por ciento interpretativa y esta caracter\u00edstica le ha permitido reinventarse una y otra vez para seguir, no solamente existiendo, pues no hay un valor intr\u00ednseco en el solo hecho de existir; sino para seguir siendo relevante.<\/p>\n

Cuestionar implica salir de la zona de confort y los cambios se logran mediante la valent\u00eda de enfrentarse al Status Quo, por m\u00e1s inc\u00f3modo que esto sea.<\/p>\n

Questioning the Norm<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Torah, in this Parashah, tells what may be one of the first \u201cfeminist\u201d claims in history. It\u2019s the story of the daughters of Zelophehad, who were left fatherless\u2014he had no sons\u2014and therefore, according to law and custom, they had no right to inherit land.<\/p>\n

But the daughters of Zelophehad were not satisfied with what the law or the norm dictated; they considered it unjust and demanded their right to equality and inheritance. And guess what\u2014God tells Moses that they are right, that their claim is legitimate.<\/p>\n

Do you think these women would have achieved a change in the status quo if they had remained silent and compliant? Definitely not. Today, they serve as an example for us\u2014not to remain passive in the face of injustice and fundamentalism, even when it is what\u2019s \u201cnormal,\u201d \u201caccepted,\u201d or \u201ccustomary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judaism has survived thanks to the ongoing questioning of the relevance of its laws and their application to the new realities brought about by the world\u2019s evolution. During the period of the First Temple, the prophets questioned the priestly system; in Babylon, the Jews were forced to create new forms of observance in a stateless reality; upon returning to Zion, Ezra and the sages of the Great Assembly carried out great reforms that have reached us today; after the destruction of the Second Temple, our sages recreated the forms of Judaism in the Talmud. And so, throughout the centuries, we have repeatedly reviewed our way of observing the Torah.<\/p>\n

Judaism is not dogmatic\u2014we do not blindly and unquestioningly believe in mysterious truths. On the contrary, it is a tradition that is one hundred percent interpretative, and this characteristic has allowed it to reinvent itself again and again, not just to continue existing\u2014since there is no intrinsic value in mere existence\u2014but to continue being relevant.<\/p>\n

To question is to step out of the comfort zone, and change is achieved through the courage to face the status quo, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.<\/p>\n
