¿Alguna vez has visto cómo se forja una espada? Para lograr la mejor es necesario fundir el metal en el fuego a altísimas temperaturas, luego de darle la forma inicial en el molde, hay que calentar y golpear el metal fuertemente con un mazo contra el yunque una y otra y otra vez; por último debe ser pulida y afilada.

Yosef era un líder nato, sin embargo, su potencial era acero en bruto. Fue necesario un extremo sufrimiento y muchísimas pruebas para que llegara a ser ese líder extraordinario que vemos más adelante, nada más y nada menos que el virrey de Egipto, el imperio más poderoso de su época. Necesitó primero ser vendido por sus hermanos, humillado como esclavo, calumniado de violador, encarcelado por muchos años; y entonces… del fuego abrazador de la prueba surgió una brillante espada de doble filo.

El fuego puede destruir, pero también puede construir. Cómo hacer que el fuego de la prueba y el sufrimiento no nos destruya, sino que nos transforme en la mejor versión de nosotros mismos, lo aprendemos del ejemplo de Yosef. Él nunca se quejó de nada de lo que le acontecía, logró descubrir detrás de cada tragedia en su vida la bondad de Dios y a tener fe y esperanza en que todo tenía una razón y un propósito.

Al igual que Yosef, todos tenemos un propósito, pero necesitamos esos momentos de prueba para sacar a la luz nuestro verdadero potencial. Si vemos al fuego como un enemigo, este nos va a destruir, si vemos la oportunidad de transformación, nos convertirá en personas fuertes y filosas como una espada, listos para enfrentar la batalla de la vida.

Esta semana iniciaremos la festividad de Januká, que también nos habla del fuego como generador de luz. La luz es apreciada justamente en medio de la oscuridad, y ese es el mensaje principal de esta celebración, que aún en los momentos más difíciles y oscuros de nuestra vida debemos mantener encendida la luz, y aferrarnos a esa esperanza de que la oscuridad no puede prevalecer contra ella.

The Fire That Forges

Have you ever seen how a sword is forged? To create the best one, the metal must be melted in fire at extremely high temperatures. After giving it its initial shape in the mold, the metal must be heated and struck forcefully with a hammer against the anvil over and over again; finally, it must be polished and sharpened.

Yosef was a natural-born leader; however, his potential was like raw steel. Extreme suffering and many trials were necessary for him to become the extraordinary leader we later see—none other than the viceroy of Egypt, the most powerful empire of his time. He first needed to be sold by his brothers, humiliated as a slave, falsely accused of assault, imprisoned for many years; and then… from the blazing fire of trial emerged a brilliant double-edged sword.

Fire can destroy, but it can also build. How can we ensure that the fire of trials and suffering does not destroy us, but instead transforms us into the best version of ourselves? We learn this from Yosef’s example. He never complained about anything that happened to him; he managed to discover, behind every tragedy in his life, God’s goodness, and he held on to faith and hope that everything had a reason and a purpose.

Just like Yosef, each of us has a purpose, but we need those moments of testing to bring our true potential to light. If we see the fire as an enemy, it will destroy us; if we see it as an opportunity for transformation, it will make us strong and sharp like a sword, ready to face the battles of life.

This week we will begin the festival of Hanukkah, which also speaks to us of fire as a generator of light. Light is appreciated precisely in the midst of darkness, and that is the main message of this celebration: that even in the most difficult and darkest moments of our lives, we must keep the light burning and hold on to the hope that darkness cannot prevail against it.
